«Stryi» media: Remembering the Fallen, Supporting the Living

I would never have wanted to start a media outlet about fallen military personnel, but after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it became impossible to think about anything else except preserving their memory and supporting their loved ones. In response to these two challenges, «Stryi» was created.

Together with friends and colleagues, I pondered a lot about what such a media outlet could be like. I was told it would be «dead». However, I have been writing obituaries since the beginning of the war, and I know for sure that they are primarily about life, not death. I believe that media with stories of the fallen can not only evoke sadness or despair but, on the contrary, inspire and empower. I hope that the memory of the fallen will encourage greater appreciation for the living. I am convinced that at a time when many people die every day, it is more important than ever to emphasize the value of each individual.
«Stryi» will tell the biographies of the fallen. Not black and white, but real. With respect, verified facts, and without sensational headlines. «Stryi» will seek important and practical information for the families of the fallen, speak with experts, and illuminate the painful and sensitive aspects of the topics. «Stryi» will be an online memorial, a database, a guide, and a platform for community building. I hope «Stryi» will become a support for those who have lost someone in this war. That is, it turns out — for each and every one of us.

«Stryi» launches amid the heat of battle and discussions about whether it is worth talking about the fallen soldiers already. I am among those who believe, without a doubt, that it is. Honoring the fallen and supporting the living cannot be postponed until peace and victory. Without it, they will not come. Moreover, memory is also our weapon.

I would never want to create such media, and for thousands of our people not to perish. However, this is impossible. Heroes die. However, their stories can live forever. Because memory is immortality.
And it certainly depends on each and every one of us.
